That lets you toggle the hud on/off with a key press.
There is another method to hide HUD and then be able to interact. Go to "Documents and Settings\All users\Application Data\Ubisoft\Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos Theory\profiles" and open SplinterCell3.ini. Look for "MagmaVisible=true" and change it to "MagmaVisible=false". Save the file. This method may cause you difficulty when you want to navigate around the menus, because all options will be invisible.

It's technically possible to disable the hud, but progressing in game without a hud isn't possible which is why I've rated it as F+.
I haven't been able to find a hud free screenshot yet.
